The Pellegrini Riesling from Schriner Vineyard in Lake County is a single year project made exclusively for our tasting room & wine club. Harvested at 22 brix, the intent was to produce a dry, low alcohol wine from this versatile, aromatic grape varietal.

Vineyard Notes
This Lake County Riesling vineyard was in its 4th leaf when we sourced our grapes from it in 2016. The Zoller family had wanted to grow Riesling since first enjoying the flavors of the dry Riesling grown in Germany as college students at the University of Goettingen in 1965-66. The property was purchased in 1985 by as an orchard from 30 year Bartlett pear growers, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shriner. The Zoller's intended to grow other red pear varieties. The Riesling ground subsequently grew Starkcrimson red pears from 1986-2009. The ground was fallowed for three years before planting the Riesling. The soil is alluvial, midway between Kelsey Creek and McGough Slough, both flowing north from the Mayacamas Mountains into Clear Lake. The soil type is listed as Cole Clay Loam in the 1927 “Soil Survey of the Clear Lake Area, California” by Carpenter, Storie and Cosby. The earlier pear orchard growth in the current Riesling section suggested the soil was the deepest in the parcel. The “Shriner” name has persisted even though the Shriners had no role in the grape production.
